music.
Since the dawn of humanity, music has been an integral part of our societies – a means of celebrating, mourning or preserving our history. The words we sing help us to express our beliefs or, sometimes, force us to re-examine our biases.
At Hampton United we believe that music helps build community; we are on a journey, discovering different ways to express ourselves musically. We encourage everyone to join in and have fun – whether it is singing, joining the choir, or finding some other way to share our talents.
Under the direction of Janet Kidd, our music ministry features lots of well-known hymns but also introduces us to new hymns or new words to familiar tunes. A variety of styles – of music and words – keeps things lively and interesting.
Our grand piano typically provides the instrumental accompaniment, with the organ and other instruments being used frequently. Congregation members often join in for special events or celebrations.
The 4-part choir leads the singing and guides the congregation through new music. Added to the mix is a weekly anthem, often composed or arranged by Janet Kidd. The voices of the choir unite to praise God and to mark special events in the life of the church.
Hampton United Church continues to host the annual Community Advent Service. Leadership has passed from the capable hands of Cheryl Bezanson, retired Music Director, to Janet Kidd who continues Cheryl’s tradition of a mass choir comprised of church musicians from Hampton area churches. This is great way to get into the spirit of the season by singing carols, listening to amazing choirs and raising funds for the Hampton Food Basket Christmas Programs.
Choir practice is usually held on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Anybody who is interested in our music ministry is welcome to attend.
